Derek Boateng arrives!

By: klaus | January 5th, 2009

As hoped, Christoph Daum’s lineup will benefit from the early arrival of Derek Boateng from Beitar Jerusalem of the Israeli Premier League. While FC Köln sporting director Michael Meier had stated the original agreement had the Ghana international arriving in July of this year they club was able to negotiate a deal to see him join early.

With 1,000 spectators in attendance for the first training session at Geißbockheim, the versatile midfielder noted his pleasure of being a part of the squad.

“It is an honour for me to be here. When I heard that I come to Köln, I was very, very happy and I am very grateful to the coach and also Herr Meier”, said the midfielder to Bild.

A high quality midfielder, he possess sound defensive abilities but has exhibited a flair for the attacking end. Christoph Daum is particularly pleased with his disciplined team play, good leadership qualities and that he is rarely culpable for defending errors. I should also variety of reports make mention of his good nature, friendly demeanor and willingness to stop to meet fans and sign autographs, as show via the photo (credit Bild) with a fan wanting him to pose with their dog. Once adjusted to Köln and the pace of the Bundesliga, I anticipate he will be a fixture in the lineup and grow in stature around the league.

Welcome Derek Boateng to Köln!

Do you think his form has stabilized now over the past few years? I remember hearing about how he would be a rising star and then couldn’t find his way onto the pitch for some of the teams he’s played on.

At least he’s starting off by saying and doing all the right things.
